Balsamic Vinaigrette Variations

Balsamic Vinaigrette:

A balsamic vinaigrette is one way to enjoy fine balsamic vinegar. You don’t have to be a world renowned chef to enjoy the art of crafting new versions of the basic balsamic vinaigrette recipe. Think about which herbs and spices you or your family enjoys most. Why not experiment? Add a few or add a lot. You may be surprised to find that adding just one or two items to your traditional balsamic vinaigrette creates a fresh, new flavor. Keep it basic or add a multitude of seasonings — the choice is yours.

Using only the finest ingredients in the making of your balsamic vinaigrette dressing is of the utmost importance. Taste is based on the quality of all that you add – for example; use extra virgin olive oil and connoisseur quality aged balsamic vinegar (and remember not to heat vinegar, it can destroy the taste). Include natural ingredients such as honey, sea salt, walnuts and raisins. Don’t be afraid to adding variations of these items to the balsamic vinaigrette.

Additional Tips & Variations:

• Be sure to add the spices and herbs to the balsamic vinegar and olive oil in small portions, frequently tasting, until the desired flavor is obtained.
• Let the balsamic vinaigrette sit for a few hours before using. The flavors of all ingredients will combine, making for better flavor.
• Store in the refrigerator in order to keep fresh for many days Mix/stir before each use as the oil will separate from the other ingredients.

Traditionally, chefs use a whisk to blend the olive oil and balsamic vinegar together when preparing a Balsamic Vinaigrette salad dressing. This works fine, but the oil and vinegar will still separate after a time, as oil and vinegar don’t mix (just like oil and water). Using a blender to thoroughly mix the olive oil and balsamic vinegar will give your a Balsamic Vinaigrette with a far superior consistency. No matter which method you choose, the flavor will be superb.

To ensure taste at it’s finest, sprinkle balsamic vinaigrette sparingly onto salad greens minutes before serving. Your guests will notice the freshness!

Balsamic vinaigrette is versatile as a seasoning. Use it to marinate meats and poultry, toss it with pasta, even use it to season rice or add flavor to potato salad. Experiment by adding a larger percentage of vinegar in these cases, custom to your palate.
