Finding the right gift

Gift selection. There used to be a time when choosing the perfect gift for family or friends was a labour of love and great pleasure could be taken in selecting the right item for the intended occasion and recipient. Sadly, the frenetic place of our daily lives prevents us from taking time we would like and ideally need to find just the right items.

Selecting a special gift requires time and imagination and is so gratifying when it is received well and the thought you have put into your choice is appreciated. The act of giving a gift says so much about how you feel about someone and your choice of gift can reflect those sentiments.

Try to avoid making expensive last minute purchases that can be costly, inappropriate, and worst of all impersonal. Take some time to read the information provided, and make your next gift the perfect choice for whatever occasion it is designed for.

Gifts for friends and families who are celebrating a move to a new home. For as long as people have had their own dwellings the practice of celebrating their new abodes has always endured. Early man was not averse to inviting the members of his community to practice the tradition of ‘warming the hearth’. Throughout history this practice has lasted, and the gifts brought to the new home have varied over time. Several hundred years ago the gifts had spiritual and significant meaning, such as bringing bread, salt and sugar. Bread and salt, being the absolute basic necessities, and sugar which signifies sweetness was thought to bring happiness to the occupants of the house. Today, the same sentiments and traditions apply and housewarming gifts are given to the occupiers of a new property as a sign of luck and friendship.

You may be in a situation where you would like to give a housewarming gift to someone or a family that has just moved close to you but you are unsure what to give as a welcoming gift.

Consider giving items that are really useful and thoughtful, such as:

Utensils for cooking
Plant pot holders,
Dish towels and cloths
Gourmet food items which could include a cruet set made of crystal for oil, vinegar and spices
A recipe book
Chocolates
China or cookware

Something more thoughtful than the traditional bottle of wine. It is common to bring the gift of wine to many social occasions and housewarming parties. This may seem like a good idea but what it lacks is a certain amount of imagination and thought. You may prefer to choose something that conveys a more personal touch and will be remembered by your hosts and that they will use long after the party has ended.

For example, gourmet items are always interesting and great to use. You may like to consider some superior blends of tea and ground coffee with accompanying mugs or tea set. Perhaps a cruet set for oil and vinegar and you accompany this with a good bottle of extra virgin olive oil and some aged balsamic vinegar. Items such a glassware, glasses and a pitcher are also well received with some interesting juices to complete the theme.

For any occasion these gifts will be welcome and will reflect your thoughtfulness and most of all be remembered fondly.
